This week the SEMI FINALS were completed at the Gumeracha Bowling Club.

Each of the Semi Finals appeared all but over very early, but the opposing sides were not told.

Gumeracha comprising of Steve Knipe, Harry Fels and Russel Whitford playing at home raced out to a 5 – 1 shot lead after 3 ends against Oakbank, their skipper Daryl Howe with Paul Yates and Herbie Hepner scored 3 shots over the next two ends to be 1 shot down.

Gumeracha shot away again to lead 8 – 4 shots after 7 ends, they were looking good. Oakbank again turned it on with 2 shots on consecutive ends. to be 8 all. Oakbank scored a vital 3 shots on the 10th end, then Gumeracha gave themselves a chance by scoring 2 shots on the eleventh end to be one shot down.

Oakbank were holding 2 shot and the match when the skippers swapped over on the last end. The Gum Skipper Steve Knipe narrowly missed the Jack and shot bowls with his first bowl, but managed to make contact with his last bowl. Sending the jack all but out of bounds, “in by a quarter of a jack”, the result may have favoured Oakbank on a long measure, Oakbank’s Skipper Daryl Howe had a bowl in hand and drew the shot to ensure a win for Oakbank.

The other Semi Final was between Mt Barker skippered by John Corner with Tony Weatherall and Chris Nichols, they were down 3 may be 4 shots on the first end but John Corner managed to move the jack to get 5 shots on the first end. Mt Barker continued to play well winning the next two ends leading 7 – nil. Lobethal Skippered by Wayne Zilm with Damian Havriluk and Joe Conte the managed to win an end scoring a single, they followed this up with the next 4 ends to draw level at 7 shot each on 8 ends. Lobethal continued on their winning way scoring a 2, single & 3 shots to lead 13 – 7 shots after 11 ends. The Mounts scored a three on the last end leaving Lobethal 13 – 10 shot winners.

Mt Barker were left wondering what had happened to their luck, as they just could not get the rub of the green on the night.

TRIPLES FINAL.

Lobethal played Oakbank with Oakbank getting away to a handy 4 shots to one shot lead after 2 ends. The match was developing in to a battle with both teams draw bowling very well. After 4 ends the score was 4 each. At the conclusion of the 8th end lobethal lead 7 shots to 6 ends, with no sign of any break away scores from either team.

Then on the 9th end Lobethal scored 5 shots, they then followed that up with a Two and 2 singles to lead 16 – 6 shots, after 12 ends. Both sides were still bowling very well, with heaps of bowls surrounding the jack. Oakbank scored a three on the 13th end with Loby settling for a single on the 14th end. Both teams agreeing not to play the last end.

The match was very entertaining with excellent bowls from both teams and worthy of a final.
