WOODSIDE take out both SINGLES.

The HBA Championship Singles for both the Men and Women began at Oakbank tonight.

In the Men’s competition there were two knockout rounds played.

The first match was between John Webb from Mt Pleasant and Mike Guerin from Uraidla. John Webb sneaked ahead to lead 9 – 4 after 6 ends. Mick then drew level on the 9th end at 9 shots each, the pair were still level on the 11th & 13th end. John again drew away but was pegged back, the two again level at 17 each on the 20th end, on the 23rd end a final result was looming as they were again level with 19 shots each. John Webb managed 2 shots on the 24th end to win his match.

The Second knockout match was as equally enthralling between Andrew Alberd Woodside and Tony Weatherall Mt Barker. On the 6th end Tony held a commanding 12 – 3 shot advantage. Andy then slowly got back into the match winning 9 of the next 12 ends to be down by one shot 17 – 16 shots. Tony appeared to have the match all but won when he picked up 3 shots on the 19th end to lead 20 – 16 shots. to his credit Andy won the next four ends to win 21 – 20 shots.

 

In the first of the Quarter Finals John Webb played Andy Alberd, Andy held a small 7 – 3 shot lead after 4 ends, John leveled at 7 shots each on the 8th end. The lead then sea sawed with the greatest margin 2 shots, after the 19th end was completed both players were again locked together on 16 shots. Andy managed to do a little better over the last 3 ends finishing up with a 2 & 3 to win his match against John 21 – 17 shots.

 

The second quarter Final was between Richard Crocker from Hahndorf and Garth Saunders from Meadows. The pair were level after 6 ends with the score 5 shots each. Richard slowly took control of the match winning 6 of the next 7 ends to lead 12 shots to 5 shots. Again over the next 7 ends Garth managed to win two ends leaving the Hahndorf player Richard Crocker winning 21 – 8 shots.

 

The third Quarter Final was between Scott Pittaway from Lenswood and Bernie Mullins from Gumeracha. This match up promised so much, however Scott raced away to an early match winning lead, on the 10th end Scott lead 10 shots to 2 shots. Bernie then won 4 of the next 5 ends scoring two shots on each end to be down 10 shots to 12 shots.

Scott again drew away to lead by 7 shots and again Bernie scrambled back into the match winning the next 4 ends to draw level at 17 shots each on 21 ends. Scott held his game together picking up two ends worth 2 shots each to win 21 – 18 shots after 24 ends.

The last of the quarter finals was played between Lobethal’s Neville Mansell and Guy Stanley from Oakbank. After a tentative start Neville lead by one shot after 5 ends. Neville then slowly drew away leading 12 shots – 4 after 10 ends. Guy managed two singles and a three late in his match but Neville ran out the match a comfortable winner 21 – 9 shots over 18 ends.

 

Next week Andy Alberd from Woodside plays Richard Crocker from Hahndorf and Scott Pittaway from Lenswood plays Neville Mansell from Lobethal.

 

SEMI FINALS – MEN

On the second night the two Semi Finals were played, with the first one between Scott Pittaway from Lenswood and Neville Mansell from Lobethal. Scott started very well to be leading 14 – 1 shots after 8 ends. Although Neville pegged the score back a little, he was still down 15 – 9 shots after 14 ends. Scott was always in control, he won the next 3 ends to finish up with a dominate 21 – 9 shot win.

The second Semi Final was between Andrew Alberd from Woodside pitted against Richard Crocker from Hahndorf. Richard had a good start to be leading 11 shots to 6 shots after 10 ends. The pair traded shots with Richard leading by 3 shots, 16 – 13  after 18 ends. Andy then pounced scoring a four and two over three ends to be leading 19 – 17 shots. Hahndorf’s Richard again scored a three on the next end to be all but home, however Andy scored two shots over a long end to secure the match 21 – 20 shots after 23 ends.

 

GRAND FINAL – MEN.

The final was being played between two bowlers that had started at a young age, they had grown and matured to be very good “younger” bowlers still with heaps of years ahead of them. Andy Alberd was up against Scott Pittaway, with Andy managing to set up an early lead of 8 – 3 shots after 6 ends. Scott then managed to have all four of his bowls sitting close to the jack, to be just one shot down. Again Andy broke away scoring a three and a four to be leading 18 – 7 shots after 11 ends, the final was being played first to 25 shots. At the conclusion of the 17th end Scott had reduced the margin to 7 shots with Andy leading 20 – 13 shots. Andy Alberd from the Woodside club then won the next two ends scoring a 3 followed by 2 shots to win 25 – 13 shots.

 

Ladies Championships.

In the Ladies knockout rounds Beth Young from Mt Barker was drawn against Bev Gerike from Lobethal. Beth never gave Bev a chance to settle getting away to a flyer leading 12 shots to 2 shots after 8 ends. Bev managed to win 5 ends (all singles) over the remainder of the match leaving Beth Young a comfortable winner 22 – 7 shots over 19 ends.

 

The other knock out match was between Leeane Attard from Oakbank and Liz Love from Mt Pleasant. Lee took an earl lead to be up 8 – 3 shot after 6 ends, her lead gradually growing to be 15 – 6 shots after 13 ends. That’s when Liz got her game moving, winning 6 of the next 7 ends to be down by one shot 18 – 17 shots after 20 ends. Oakbank’s Lee had been stuck on 18 shots for four ends but on the 21st end she scored a match winning 3 shots, taking her score to 21 – 17 shots.

 

In the first of the quarter finals Mt Barker’s Beth Young played Lee Attard from Oakbank. Beth fresh from an easy first round win Beth produced the same quality to defeat Lee 22- 1 shots over 14 ends.

 

The second of the quarter finals was between Julia Gadson from Woodside, she played Kathryn Atkinson from Gumeracha. Julia lead in her match to be up 9 – 4 shots after 6 ends. Gum’s Kathryn then took the lead, but both players found themselves level on the 12th end with 13 shots each. Kathryn again went in to the lead but again Julia fought back to lead 19 – 17 shots after 19 ends. The pair each scored singles with Julia getting home scoring two shots on the 23rd end, winning 22 – 19 shots.

 

The third quarter final and easily the match of the night was between Gill Bartley from Uraidla and Sandy Hole from Meadows. Sandy opened up a 5 shot lead, what was to be the biggest margin in the match, to be 7 shots to 2 after 7 ends. Gill won 5 of the next 6 ends to lead 11- 8 shots. The pair were then locked together on twelve shots each after 17 ends. Again Sandy took a small lead to be 18 – 14 shots after 22 ends, but Gill scored a 3 on the next end to draw within one shot on the 23rd end. Sandy was looking to finish off the match appearing to have multiple scores, but was held to single shots on the next two ends, leading 20 – 17 shots after 25 ends. Again Sandy was holding shots to win the match on the 26th end but Gill would produce some brilliant bowls to save the end, picking up two shots to be 19 – 20 shots down. On the 27th end again Sandy held the shot and match point but again Gill drew in to draw level on 20 shots each. With the scores level the 28th end promised to be the decider and it lived up to be a cracker, Gill drew shot with Sandy sending her bowl down to sit next to the shot bowl, although the umpire was called to decide the final result, Gill survived to win 21 – 20 shots over 28 ends of bowls. The crowd of onlookers applauded both bowlers Gill Bartley from Uraidla and Sandy Hole from Meadows on a great performance of quality bowls, worthy of a final.

 

Unfortunately the last of the quarter finals resulted in a forfeit to Helen Mason as her opponent from Hahndorf was unwell.

 

Next week the Semi Final will see Beth Young Mt Barker against Julia Gadson from Woodside and Gill Bartley from Uraidla play Helen Mason from Lenswood.

LADIES SEMI FINALS

The first ladies Semi Final was played between Julia Gadson from Woodside, her opponent Beth Young from Mt Barker. Julia took an early lead in her match to be up 10 – 6 shots on the 10th end, although Beth scored a 3 Julia responded with six shot over the next 3 ends to be up 16 – 9 shots. At the conclusion of the 19th end Julia had a 19 – 13 shot lead, Julia wanting two shots to win had to wait as Beth scored a two herself but Julia then got her wish scoring 2 shots on the 21st end to win 21 – 15 shots.

 

The other Semi final was between Gill Bartley from Uraidla and Helen Mason from Lenswood. Helen started much better to be leading Gill 11 – 2 shots after 7 ends. The match looked to be all but over after the 16th end as Helen was leading 19 – 6 shots. Gill then scored seven shots over the next 3 ends to be down 13 – 19 shots. Helen managed to get an all important single on the next end to be leading 20 – 13 shots, wanting just one more shot to win. Gill the rattled off the next 3 ends scoring a single, 4, & 2 shots to draw level on 20 shots each. Gill then managed to score another single shot to win on the next end, leaving Helen stuck on 20 shots.

LADIES FINAL.

The Ladies from Uraidla Gill Bartley and Julia Gadson from Woodside had a good tight tussle for most of their match. Gill started the better to be leading 12 – 5 shots after 9 ends. Julia then managed to win the next 4 ends to take the lead 13 – 12 shots. From there on the match sea sawed with the two players locked together on the 19th end at 17 shots each. On the next end Julia scored a three, only to see Gill score a pair of two’s, Julia again scored another three to again take the lead 23 – 21 shots after 23 ends, both players wanting to be the first to 25 shots to win. Gill scored first with a single, then Julia Gadson cemented the win with another three, to win her match 26 – 22 shots after 25 ends.

The win giving Woodside the honor of having BOTH SINGLES Champion’s, Men & Women.
