HARRISON Shield.

Oakbank Bowling Club have won the prestigious Harrson Shield for the first time since changing their name from “Onkaparinga” some 20 years ago. The Tournament is used as a pre-curser to selecting an Association side to play in the early New Year.

In cold blustery conditions the players from all ten Clubs in the Hills were sheltered by playing under the dome at Mt Barker, each team playing two games of Fours & two games of Pairs.

After 3 games had been completed, Oakbank had 3 wins with Uraidla looming as their main rival with 2 wins and a draw.

Gumeracha & Woodside each had 2 wins and were in with an outside chance if both of the pace setters were to loose in the final round.

Gumeracha skippered by Bernie Mullins rallied after being down early to defeat Wayne Zilm from Lobethal 13 – 11 shots in the final match to finish on 3 wins.

Shane Harris skippered Woodside, but they were down early in their match against Meadows skippered by Garth Saunders, the woods scored 5 shots on the last 2 ends to finish with a drawn match, leaving them with 2 wins and a draw.

Uraidla skippered by David Wutke played against Mt Pleasant skippered by Chad Vivian. Uraidla needed to win to have any chance of an overall victory, but were chasing the scoreboard for most of their match, going down to the mounts 12 – 9 shots.

The other remaining match with no impact on the overall result was played between Lenswood skippered by Scott Pittaway & Mt Barker skippered by Brenton Smith, Lenswood got away to a great start to lead 10 – 1 shots after 7 ends with the final score 11 – 6 shots.

With all the other clubs trying to challenge for an overall win, Oakbank settled down to take an early 10 – 1 shot lead after 6 ends. The final score was a lot closer, but Oakbank won their match against Hahndorf skippered by Phil Nagel with a score of 12 – 8 shots.

Oakbank’s winning team consisted of Guy Stanley Skippering, Daryl Howe, Steve Van der Veen and Brett Carter leading.

Oakbank won their first Fours match against Lenswood 9 – 8 shots, their two Pairs matches against Meadows 10 – 9 shots & 12 – 2 shots, finishing off in the Fours again with 12 – 8 shots.

The final tally showed Oakbank 4 wins, Gumeracha 3 wins, Hahndorf & Woodside each with 2 wins & a Draw,

Mt Pleasant & Lenswood each with 2 wins. Mt Barker a win & a Draw, Lobethal & Hahndorf one win each then Meadows one drawn match.
