Pairs at Mt Pleasant.

The HBA pairs champ of Champs started at Mt Pleasant with one round set to be played, between 6.pm and 8.00pm.

The weather was threatening with a possibility of lightning. The matches got under way but soon the rain started with players ducking for cover every few ends. As the night progressed the players appeared to be more interested in getting their matches over playing in some heavier rain.

The onlookers were comfortable under cover, enjoying their Beef or Chicken Hamburgers. Very nice.

MEN’S Section.

In the Men’s section the first of the knockout matches was between Oakbank and Uraidla. the Uraidla boys with Geoff Deeble Skippering with Kym Kotz started the better to be leading 4 – 1 shots after 4 ends. Oakbank skippered by Paul VandeWater with Brett Carter leading, then won 6 of the remaining 8 ends to win 12 shots to 9 shots.

 

The second of the knockout matches saw Hahndorf skippered by Jamie Burt defeat the Meadows team skippered by Garth Saunders with Greg Morrison, the score 14 – 5 shots. Hahndorf started the better leading 9 – 1 shots after 5 ends. With a winning lead both teams trade ends with low scores being achieved.

The winners of the two knockout matches will play each other early on Sunday Morning in a quarter final.

One of the quarter finals was played tonight with Gumeracha skippered by Craig Oborn with Steve Knipe coming home with a charge, scoring 2 shots on each of the last 3 ends to snatch a win over Mt Barker skippered by Chris Evans with Rob Milburn, their final score 11 – 9 shots. Gumeracha will play their Semi Final at 12 noon.

Their match was level at 3 shots each after 5 ends, Mt Barker scored a 3 on the 9th end to lead 9 shots to 5 and appeared to be looking the goods, that’s when the Gums scored their 6 shots over the last 3 ends.

The other two quarter finals will be Woodside and Lenswood plus Mt Pleasant and Lobethal, all matches starting at 9.00am.

The second round of bowls was played in near perfect conditions, with a strong breeze blowing in during the second match of the day.

In another quarter final, Hahndorf managed to defeat Oakbank with the score 17 – 12 shots. After 3 ends the score was level at 3 shot each, then Oakbank managed to score 5 shots.Hahndorf replied with a 3 and 5 to hold a 5 shot lead on the 7th end. Although Oakbank again scored another 3 shots, Hahndorf steadied winning the next 3 ends and the match by 5 shots.

 

The third Quarter final between Woodside skippered by Steve Baker with Trevor Kretschmer filling in as a substitute out played the more fancied Lenswood team skippered by Scott Pittaway with Mick Glasson. The two teams were locked together on 6 shots each after 5 ends, however Woodside won 4 of the next 5 ends to hold a 5 shot lead after 10 ends. Lenswood won the remaining 2 ends scoring 3 shots, but Woodside prevailed to win 13 – 10 shots.

 

The last quarter final was between Mt Pleasant skippered by Colin Fawcett with Alexander MacLachlan playing against Neville Mansell with Joe Conte. The Lobethal team held a 5 – 1 shot advantage after 4 ends and blowing out to an 8- 2 shot lead after 7 ends. The mounts then scored 5 shots over the next 2 ends to be 1 shot down on the 9th end. The Loby team then won the remaining 3 ends to finish up 14 – 7 shot winners.

 

The first of the Semi finals was contested between Gumeracha and Hahndorf. The first 8 ends resulted in all being  single shot with the Gums leading 5 – 3 shots. Over the remaining 4 ends Gum won 3 of the each resulting in 2 shots each to finish up 11 – 4 shot winners.

The second semi final was between Lobethal and Woodside, the Loby team leading 5 shots to 3 after 4 ends. Woodside managed to keep in touch being one shot down on the 7th end. Lobethal managed to get 3 valuable shots on the 8th end to go 4 shots up. Both teams shared the last 4 ends scoring 3 shots each leaving Lobethal with a 12 – 8 shot win.

In the final, Lobethal with Neville Mansell and Joe Conte were up against Gumeracha Skippered by Craig Oborn and Steve Knipe, after 4 ends Loby held a one shot lead. Lobethal the drew away winning the next 4 ends to hold a 11 – 3 shot lead, Gumeracha then won three of the next four ends to be 3 shots down and looking as if they could sneak a win with the score 12 shots – 9 shots. Lobethal sealed the match with seven shots over the next two ends to be leading 19 – 9 shots after 14 ends when both teams called the match finished.

LADIES Section.

The Ladies played under the same format as the men. Gumeracha skippered by Carherine Atkinson with Feli Sandercock played Lobethal skippered by Kelly Stanbury and Chris Jarman. The Gums team jumped away to lead 6 shots to nil after 3 ends. Then Lobethal won 7 of the next 8 ends scoring a 2, 3, 4 and 6 shots on the 11th end, with the result out of reach for Gumeracha, the two sides agreed to halt play in the greasy conditions with Lobethal winning 18 – 8 shots.

Hahndorf skippered by Sue Maddern with Shelley Howe and Mt Barker skippered by Judy Thomas with Beth Young had a close match up to the 8th end with the scores tied together at 6 shots each. Hahndorf broke the match wide open scoring 5 shots on the 9th end, although Mt Barker then managed to score 2 shot back on the next end Hahndorf replied wit 3 shots over the remaining ends to finish up winning 14 – 8 shots.

Lobethal and Hahndorf will meet on Sunday Morning in a quarter final.

As with the men, the ladies also played a quarter final with Meadows skippered by Sheryl Joseph and Sandy Hole playing against Dianne Green with Renee Green. Meadows started well winning the first 3 ends for 4 shots, Lenswood replied with 4 shots over the next 3 ends, with the score 4 shots each after 6 ends. Meadows then scored 5 shots over the next two ends, again Lenswood replied with 3 shot over the next 2 ends to be down 9 – 7 shots after 10 ends. That’s when the Meadows combination won the match scoring  5 shots on the 11th end. The final score 14 shots – 8 shots, with Meadows advancing to a Semi Final to be played at 12 noon.

The ladies quarter finals Hahndorf with Sue Maddern and Shelley Howe played Lobethal skippered by Kelley Stanbury with Chris Jarman,  the Hahndorf started on a high note scoring a match winning 6 shots on the first end, then two more singles to be up 8 – nil shots. Lobethal won the next two ends for three shots, but again Hahndorf won the next 3 ends to lead 13 – 3 shots after 8 ends. Lobethal won 3 of the last 4 ends to leave Hahndorf winning  the match 15 – 7 shots.

Another quarter final was played between Woodside skippered by Annette Forbes with Julia Gadson leading against Oakbank, their skipper Lee Attard with Karen Van DeWater. The more experienced Woodside team won the first 5 ends to lead 11 shots to nil. Oakbank then won 4 of the next 5 ends, all low scores to be 12 shots – 5 shots down. Woodside won the remaining two ends to finish up 15 – 5 shot winners.

The Last of the quarter finals was between Mt Pleasant skippered by Vicki Fawcett with Samantha Schiltz playing against Uraidla skippered by Joanne Schapel with Ros Story. The Mounts playing at home were too good for the Uraidla team conceding 3 single shots late in their match, to win 15 – 3 shots.

Hahndorf played Meadows in the first of the semi finals, after an even start to the match Hahndorf held a comfortable 8 – 2 shot lead after 5 ends. The Meadows team replied with 5 shots  to 2 shots over the next 5 ends to be  down to the Hahndorf team 10 – 7 shots on the 10th end. Meadows scored 2 shots on the 11th end to be one shot down. On the final end both teams held shot at various stages, with Meadows hanging on to score 3 shots to finish up winning 12 – 10 shots.

The second semi final was between Mt Pleasant and Woodside, the mounts again had a very good start leading 11 shots to 1 shot after 6 ends. Woodside won 3 of the next 5 ends but again all low scores to be 13 – 5 shots down, the Woodside team scoring 3 shots on the last end, to leave Mt Pleasant winning 13 – 8 shot winners.

 

The Ladies final was played between Mt Pleasant skippered by Vickie Fawcett with Sam Schultz playing against Meadows skippered by Sheryl Joseph with Sandy Hole, again the Mt Pleasant team started well winning the first 3 ends but they were all singles. The Meadows team fought back and both teams were level on the 9th end with the score 6 shots each. Mt Pleasant edged ahead to be up 8 – 7 shots after 12 ends, it was then that the Meadows team won 3 shots in a very entertaining end with some brilliant bowls. Meadows then scored two more shots on the 14th end to go up 12 shots – 8 shots with one end to play, the mounts scoring a single leaving the Meadows team winning 12 shots – 9 shots.
