CHAMP OF CHAMP TRIPLES

The HBA Championships commenced at the Woodside Bowling Club last Friday night – with triples sides vying for the title.

Hahndorf overcame Gumeracha in a preliminary elimination match, to face of against Mt. Barker in round one. Jamie Burt got his trio off to a great start, winning the first four ends to lead 8-0. John Corner fought back, picking up multiples to bring the score back to 13-11 – but Hahndorf responded, taking five of the next six ends to secure the win 21-12.

Mike Guerin’s Uraidla team were level with Wayne Zilm’s Lobethal side after five ends, but Uraidla got on a roll to blow their lead out to 17-7 after 13 ends. Lobethal rallied, but Uraidla closed the match out 19-12.

With the home ground advantage, Woodside were full of confidence entering their match against Meadows – with Scott Pittaway’s rink up by 15-9 with three ends remaining. However Greg Edmonds fought back, picking up five shots in the closing stages for Meadows, only to go down 15-14.

In the remaining first round match, Bob Fiddes of Oakbank took on Terry Stephen of Lenswood. Oakbank adapted to the fast green much quicker, and stormed away to a 16-2 lead after seven ends. However Lenswood won the next six ends to reduce the deficit to five shots, before Oakbank steadied in the closing stages – running out 21-12 winners.

In the second round Hahndorf put in a dominant display against Uraidla, winning their way through to the final 18-6. Woodside and Oakbank were neck and neck during the early stages, with the scores level at 10 all after 12 ends. However the parochial crowd then got behind the home side, spurring them on in the late stages, to take the match 19-14.

The triples final will be played on Sunday 28th January 2024 at 1.30pm at the Hahndorf Bowling Club.

Next week the Association fours championships will commence at Gumeracha on Friday night. Matches will commence at 5.30pm, with food and drinks available for players and spectators.
