HBA CHAMPIONSHIP FOURS

The HBA Championships continued on Friday 19th January 2024 – with the Gumeracha Bowling Club hosting the twilight fours competition.

Hahndorf accounted for Meadows in the preliminary knockout match – to earn a first round spot against Lobethal. The highly experienced skippers in Jamie Burt and Wayne Zilm made for what was expected to be a close encounter. However Lobethal were consistent throughout, winning all but four ends, to record a 20-5 victory.

Gumeracha made the most of the home ground advantage – with Bernie Mullins taking on Uraidla’s Steve Tarr. Scores were locked at 13 all with two ends remaining, but Gumeracha picked up shots on both to close out the match 16-13.

Mt. Barker’s John Grant took on Oakbank’s Fed Dorr, with Oakbank getting away to a strong start, leading 11-3 after seven ends. Mt. Barker then collected six shots on the eighth end to tighten up the score. However Oakbank consolidated, taking the match 16-12.

Lenswood came in as underdogs against Woodside, with Terry Stephen taking on Scott Pittaway. Scores were tight, but no one was surprised that Woodside led the entire way. However Lenswood overcame a two shot deficit on the final end, to win 12-11.

The semi- finals between Lobethal/Gumeracha and Lenswood/Oakbank had just commenced, and were four ends in, when play had to be postponed due to a lighting failure. Both matches will be resumed on Sunday 28th January 2024 at 10.30am for an 11.00am start at the Hahndorf Bowling Club. These matches will precede the triples and fours finals, which will start at approximately 1.30pm. Woodside and Hahndorf are already through to the triples final – and as there is no possibility of a double up of players, the fours final will be played concurrently.
