THIRD ROUND OF PRESIDENT’S CUP

The third round of the President’s Cup was held in ideal conditions at the Meadows Bowling Club on Friday night.

Neville Mansell’s Green side secured top spot, with a straight sets win in the triples and pairs over Scott Pittaway’s Red side.  Mansell skippered Alan Dunn and Brian Scown in the triples to defeat Butch Mik, Ted Robinson, and Jay Maslen.  It was a relatively close contest – but the Greens picked up four shots on each of the fifth and fifteenth ends to run out winners 18-8.  Likewise, the pairs was a close affair, with Pittaway and Val Deeble for the Reds, tackling Mark Schutt and David Freebairn for the Green side. The Reds picked up seven of the fifteen ends, but the Greens got the numbers, collecting four on the last end to win 17-4.

Jamie Burt’s Blue side were hoping for a big night – with a win and a loss in previous rounds, a win was needed against Mike Guerin’s Yellow side to secure a top two spot in next week’s finals.  Geoff Deeble got his triples team off to a good start, with Terry Holding and Dave Grego establishing a 14-6 lead after 12 ends.  However Steve Knipe for the Yellow team rallied the troups, with Mike Baronaitis and George Coleiro fighting back to collect eight shots on the last three ends to record a 14 all draw.  However in the captain’s role, Jamie Burt stepped up with Richard Crocker to take the pairs comfortably over Mike Guerin and Stephen Tarr 22-11.

Next week Mt. Barker will host the finals – with Neville Mansell’s Green side taking on Jamie Burt’s team for first and second – and Scott Pittaway’s Reds and Mike Guerin’s Yellows chasing third place.

Play will start at 6.30pm start – with food and bar facilities available from 5.30pm onwards.

Five players remain undefeated, and are in contention for the player of the series award – Alan Dunn, Neville Mansell, Jamie Burt, Richard Crocker, and David Freebairn.
